Digitizing the Hostel Mess Token System

😥 The biggest Challenge

The hostel mess had an outdated system of issuing special food tokens, which led to long queues and the need to physically preserve tokens until the day they could be availed for eating. The goal was to digitize the complete process of viewing the menu and availing tokens online instead of manually.

Solution

🔥 Our team of 5 members developed a solution that involved creating two web apps - one for the hostel mess administration and one for the students.

🔥 For the students, we also developed a Progressive Web Application (PWA) that provided a mobile-like experience but was actually a web app.

Results

The new system has been highly successful, with an average of 600 students using it every day. The administrative workload has been reduced by 95%, as the system is now automated and digital. Students can view the menu and avail tokens online, eliminating the need for long queues and physical tokens. The transparent billing system allows students to easily calculate their mess bills, adding to the convenience of the system.

Conclusion

The project was a success, and the project's goal of digitizing the hostel mess token system was achieved. The new system has made the process more efficient and convenient for both the administration and the students. The utilization of a PWA added to the overall user experience, providing students with a mobile-like experience without the need for a dedicated mobile app. Our tech stack of HTML, CSS, JS, JQUERY, AJAX, Bootstrap, Python Flask, and MongoDB proved to be the perfect fit for the project's requirements.
